Nick Asher: (Invited): Constraints in Discourse: Part of a more general theory of rationality? SDRT promotes two central ideas relevant to constraints in discourse: (1) dynamic semantic update is constrained by discourse structure; (2) discourse coherence is a scalar phenomenon and so discourse structure construction should proceed by maximizing discourse coherence given the resources available. The first idea has led to a refinement of Polanyi’s right frontier constraint; the constraint has violations, but only when there is sufficient information that guides the dynamic update process. Further, anaphora resolution, which is a key by-product of dynamic semantic update is a powerful tool that tells us a great deal about the structural properties of the individual discourse relations; it can tell us whether relations like Explanation, Result, and so on are coordinating or subordinating discourse relations, which is key to defining the right frontier. The second idea has led to a more careful analysis of various discourse relations and the discourse structures of which they are parts as well, leading to scalar analyses of Narration, Contrast, and Parallel, as well as a scalar conception of overall discourse coherence. After reviewing some of these features of SDRT, I want to ask a more general question: are these constraints sui generis, or do they have a grounding in a broader theory of rationality. I will appeal to recent game theoretic analyses by Itai Sher, Madison Williams and myself in an attempt to try to make a preliminary classification.
